What the specs mean for you
Thermoblock heating: fast to ready and compact, with less thermal stability than a boiler-based machine. PID holds brew temperature steady shot to shot — the single biggest upgrade over a thermostat-only machine at this tier. Pre-infusion wets the puck gently before full pressure, which helps extraction on lighter roasts. No built-in grinder — budget for a separate burr grinder; that's a real second purchase first-machine buyers often underestimate. Its 54mm portafilter is what determines which third-party baskets, tampers and bottomless portafilters fit — accessories sized for a different mm won't. At 11.9in wide (manufacturer spec), measure your counter gap before ordering — "compact" varies a lot machine to machine.
Who it's for
- Beginner — Easy to learn, forgiving, good first machine.
- Latte & cappuccino — Steam power and simultaneous brew/steam for milk-heavy drinks.
- Small kitchen — Compact machines for tight counters.
The boiler, in plain terms
Heats water on demand through a metal block instead of holding a boiler tank. Fast to ready, compact, common in entry machines; temperature stability is the trade-off. See every thermoblock / thermocoil machine →
